Character Building

A child’s character begins at home and continues to develop at school. Character education concerns various aspects, from understanding, emotions to different behaviors. As such, for children to form proper behaviors, the school should then act as an incubator creating exemplary and human practices vividly demonstrating living values as guidance for children’s lives in later years. To this end, “learning to behave, to be well-mannered” is equally important to, or even more important than knowledge and skill acquisition.

 

“Intelligence plus Character” are the two ultimate goals of a true education, as assessed by Martin Luther King.

 

TRAINING MOTTO L.O.V.E

Character building does not take a day or a week or a year, but should be continued throughout a child’s life. In the early childhood years, children acquire living values, develop their emotions and often behave in accordance with what they directly receive from their learning environment, from the behaviors of adults, teachers and from the interaction they have with peers. As such, in order to create a positive environment that supports character building and developing, our training motto is L.O.V.E – an acronym, which means LIVE OUR most, cherished VALUES EVERY DAY.

6 Living values for character building

The 6 living values as suggested by Josephson Institute (The U.S.A), grouped and integrated in lessons and play as well as all the activities of all grade levels at any time at KINDY CITY are as follows:

Respect

– Treat others with respect.

– Be tolerant of differences.

– Use good manners in both speech and behavior.

– Be considerate of others’ feelings.

– Do not threaten, hit or hurt anyone.

– Deal with others peacefully, and be able to control anger.

Trustworthiness

– Be honest, and do not deceive or steal.

– Be reliable: do what you say you will do.

– Have the courage to do the right thing.

– Build a good reputation.

– Be loyal: show filial piety to parents, and stand by family and friends.

Responsibility

– Do what you are assigned to, and what supposed to do.

– Persevere: keep on trying.

– Always do your best.

– Be able to maintain self-control and self-discipline

– Be able to think before you act – consider the results of your actions

– Be accountable for your choices.

Fairness

– Play according to the rules.

– Take turns and share.

– Be open-minded and listen.

– Don’t blame others.

Caring

– Be kind.

– Be compassionate and show you care for others.

– Express gratitude

– Forgive others.

– Help people in need.

Citizenship

– Obey class and school regulations.

– Cooperate with peers and teachers.

– Respect and preserve the living environment.

– Express your thoughts and viewpoints on the environment.

Implementation Approach T.E.A.M

Teach

Beginning with adults – teachers are those who lead, share and show the children the difference between right and wrong – norms in behaviors with explanations, listening to and recognizing the children’s opinions.

Enforce

Teachers, together with children, reward and honor good behaviors, show fairness and discourage all the stances of misbehavior.

Advocate

In order to live our cherished values everyday, the whole school including the teachers, supporting staff and students encourage each other to live up to the afore-mentioned values, demonstrate not to be neutral or harbor wrongdoings or improper conduct.

Model

Teachers always set good examples for students to follow. Do what you say and together with children reinforce positive behavior, and be accountable and apologize sincerely for mistakes.

 

With L.O.V.E –“Live with our most treasured values everyday” as a motto, KINDY CITY advocates to group and integrate The SIX LIVING VALUES not only into the 1O AREAS OF LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT, but also in every single activity of the school with an implementation approach TEAM in which the role of all the staff are teachers, enforcers, encouragers and models for all the students.
